I've uploaded a picture and it has noticeable compression artefacts even though the original has none. The file size also changed upload 109kB vs 381 original.

I asked the same thing few months ago. All images uploaded in .jpg format get compressed by the site. If you want images to stay in their original quality you should upload in .png. I personally convert most of my images to .png when i'm about to upload them here.
